Maternity session: Studio or location?

Maternity Photoshoot Edmonton

A question I frequently receive from expectant mothers is whether to book a studio session or an outdoor one. Ultimately, the choice boils down to your personal preferences and how you envision your session. While both focus on capturing the beauty of pregnancy, they differ in approach and outcome.

Outdoor Maternity Session

For outdoor sessions, we collaborate on selecting the perfect location that aligns with your vision, whether it's a natural or urban setting. I give considerable time to scouting locations and ensuring they're optimal for shooting. Timing is crucial for capturing colours in my outdoor shoots, so we often schedule sessions during the golden hour before sunset or just as the sun dips. Clients have the option to choose outfits from my client closet, but the selection of certain pieces depends on the weather. For colder months, we opt for thicker fabrics, while lighter options are perfect for warmer seasons. Additionally, I bring along essentials like a change tent and a blanket for comfort during the shoot.

In contrast, studio sessions offer more control over lighting and settings. Regardless of the time of day, I use studio lights to create the desired atmosphere, often incorporating gels for colourful backdrops. We discuss your favourite colours and preferences to tailor the session accordingly. Props like boxes and fans add dynamic elements to the photo shoot. Clients can select wardrobe pieces from my collection, which influence the backdrop choices. It's essential to coordinate makeup for flash photography, so I recommend informing your makeup artist beforehand.

Whether you opt for a studio or outdoor session, I advise clients to schedule hair and makeup appointments a few hours before the shoot for a polished look. Now that you're acquainted with the differences between the two types of sessions, which one resonates with your vision?
