Maternity Photoshoot with Edmonton Photographer
The Challenges of Moving Across the Country
If you've ever moved, you know all too well the exhausting process that comes with it. Packing everything into boxes, labeling each one carefully so you can find your items quickly when it's time to unpack—it all seems organized at first. But as time ticks away, you often find yourself rushing to fit even more into boxes, realizing you're running low on both space and energy. It's a bit like trying to solve a puzzle with too many pieces!
For me, the move from Ontario to Edmonton was a whirlwind. I thought the process might be more stressful than bringing home a newborn baby during the height of COVID while managing online schooling for three elementary-aged kids. (Yep, those were some intense days for us in the Pen household!) Seeing all our belongings loaded into a truck was a nerve-wracking experience, knowing we wouldn’t see our things again for a while. My biggest concern was my photography gear and client closet, which were traveling halfway across Canada!
When we finally got the keys to our new home in Edmonton, it was such a relief! Unpacking the boxes and finding spots for all my items felt like a small victory each day. My photography gear, props, and client wardrobe slowly found their places in our new space, and I could feel the excitement bubbling up to get back to what I love most—creating beautiful maternity photos for my clients.
The First Maternity Photoshoot in Edmonton
One of my first maternity clients in Edmonton was the lovely Helen. She was open to the idea of wearing pieces from my client closet, which made me even more excited to get started. During our initial conversations, I asked her about her favorite colors and suggested a few outfits that I thought would look absolutely stunning on her. We ultimately decided on a gorgeous two-piece teal outfit that hadn’t been worn by any of my clients before.
The outfit consisted of a teal top that sat just above the belly, paired with a matching skirt featuring ruffles along a side split. What I love about this outfit is its versatility—the skirt can be worn either above or below the belly, allowing the mom-to-be to decide how much of her bump she’d like to show off. It’s the perfect choice for a maternity photoshoot that focuses on both comfort and style.
Maternity Photoshoot at The Government House
With the outfit and date set, all we needed was the perfect location. We chose The Government House, a beautiful spot in Edmonton with loads of charming areas for a maternity photoshoot. On the day of the shoot, Helen arrived with her husband and their adorable two-year-old son, ready to make some magical memories.
We started with a few family photos, capturing the three of them together in the picturesque surroundings. Then, we moved on to some sweet moments between mom and son, followed by a few close-up shots of the soon-to-be big brother next to his mom’s belly. Watching Helen's son interact with his soon-to-be baby sister in his own special way was heartwarming and made for some truly precious pictures.
Creating Dreamy Maternity Photos with Edmonton Skies
After capturing those beautiful family moments, it was time for some solo shots of Helen. She posed gracefully in front of The Government House, and we made our way to the path leading to Government Hill. As if on cue, the sun began to set, casting the sky in the most stunning shades of pink and blue. It was the kind of scene that every Edmonton photographer dreams of—cotton candy skies creating the perfect backdrop for maternity photos.
With the city’s skyline behind her and the sunset's soft glow highlighting her silhouette, we captured some of the most breathtaking images of the day. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful maternity photoshoot, filled with love, laughter, and the promise of a new beginning.
